expansion -- Sheridan center would hold 200 more inmates

A nearly $12 million addition to
the newly reopened Sheridan Correctional Center will be part of the
state construction budget Gov. Rod Blagojevich unveils this
week. Since it reopened in January, Sheridan, in La Salle
County, has specialized in treating prisoners with drug
problems. The addition will house 200 beds for inmates who have
successfully completed the first 12 months of their treatment at the
facility, according to an administration source who spoke on
condition of anonymity. There will be just one inmate per cell.
The total cost
of the addition is $11.75 million, but the administration expects
federal money to cover about $9 million of that. If the General
Assembly approves the project, construction could start in September
and be completed in five months.
Sheridan was a
medium-security prison when then-Gov. George Ryan ordered it closed
in 2002 to save money. During his campaign for governor that year,
Blagojevich pledged to reopen the prison, one of La Salle County's
largest employers, if elected. It did reopen, but not as
a standard state prison. Sheridan houses inmates who volunteer to
complete a drug-treatment program. Drug abuse is a leading reason
ex-convicts end up back in prison. Sheridan is supposed to
incorporate the best drug-treatment approaches from around the
country in one facility. There are 500 inmates at the prison, with
another 50 added each week. When the prison is fully operational, it
will house 1,300 inmates.
Sheridan targets
offenders in need of drug treatment who are projected to serve six to
24 months behind bars. They undergo intensive drug treatment,
counseling and vocational education. Upon their release, they
participate in a closely monitored community re-entry and supervision
program involving a parole agent and re-entry team. |

As reported on this list several times, LaSalle Sheriff main working
(dispatch) is Clear Talk trunked system. The VHF "primary",
155.700, is used almost as
much, repeater system with 159.030 input. Sheriff
"secondary" 155.145 is simplex.

Ottawa IDOT HQ - 47.02 base/47.10 mobiles. Heard bridge
inspection crew using this freq on handheld units a few weeks ago
inspecting Seneca IL rte 170
bridge. Busy during snow. This is large area HQ and
maint garage with BIG tower on US 6 just west of Fox River,
E edge of Ottawa. Also 2 band
HF dipole antenna visible on roof of building, but don't know what
freq's are used.
