Jersey board changes the way ambulances are dispatched   3/15/2004   By LAURA PRANAITIS   The Telegraph

JERSEYVILLE -- Residents in parts of Piasa Township will see some new faces if they ever need emergency medical treatment, because the Jersey County Board voted to change the way ambulances are dispatched in the county.  The board voted unanimously at its monthly March meeting to adopt a resolution that changes an old agreement the county had with the Jersey Community Hospital Ambulance Service to be the first responder to emergencies in every part of the county.

Under the new plan, Alton Memorial Hospital Ambulance Service will be the first responder to emergencies in the eastern part of Piasa Township from the Madison-Jersey County line on Illinois Route 111 to just north of Gun Club Road outside of Brighton. Board member Don Little said on average, Alton Memorial’s ambulances have a faster response time than Jersey Community Hospital’s to that area of the county.

Little said the main concern for revamping the way ambulances are dispatched was response time. He said he has received several telephone calls from taxpayers who are concerned about getting ambulance service as quickly as possible, regardless of which hospital the ambulance is from. He said some Jersey County 911 dispatchers also had expressed concerns about the system.   

Alton Memorial Hospital usually has an ambulance stationed at Lewis and Clark Community College or roving in the Godfrey area, which is approximately six or seven miles away, Little said, and on average makes it to the Brighton area faster than Jersey Community Hospital ambulances. Jerseyville is approximately 15 miles away from Brighton.   "Alton Memorial has a good response time to Piasa Township. Jersey Community Hospital has a good response time for the remainder of Jersey County," he said.

It will be the responsibility of the 911 dispatchers to notify the correct ambulance service in the case of an emergency, Little said.

1/31/00 - Will serve the 20,000 residents, in about 765 square miles. Cost of $700,000.   Each emergency vehicle will be equipped with a GPS responder. The system will be able to track wireless phone calls to with-in 100 feet.  This will all be displayed on a computer map showing the precise geographic location. Address information and digital photos will be fed into computer banks at several 911 PSAPs, so finding the caller will take minimal time.
