BEARDSTOWN - The Excel Corp. meatpacking plant and its parent, CargillInc., have given $50,000 to the city for a new police station. The city has hired interpreters for its police department, and the publicschools now offer bilingual classes. The 2000 Census reported that Hispanics accounted for 18 percent of the city's 5,766 residents. With more than 2,000 workers, Excel is the largest employer in Beardstown, 45 miles west of Springfield.
In addition to giving the grant for the police station, Excel and Cargill together gave $6,000 to Beardstown's volunteer fire department for new equipment and $2,000 to the Beardstown library for computers.

2/18/01 - More than 10 years have passed since voters approved the creation of the 911 system. Officials are confident the system will be up by this spring. The referendum overwhelming passed on Nov 6, 1990 which charges $2 per phone, for this rural county.
