Ground broken for South Jacksonville firehouse   By BUFORD GREEN  STAFF WRITER

SOUTH JACKSONVILLE - The long-awaited South Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Department Firehouse became a step closer to reality Saturday afternoon.
Village and state officials were on hand for the ceremonial ground breaking for the new 8,000-square-foot building that will eventually ease the crowding at the South Jacksonville Village Hall and could one day lead to a new municipal building.
The project, which will be erected on five acres donated by the Coultas family, is located a few dozen yards off of West Vandalia and a few blocks from the current Village Hall, which also houses the village's police department and city offices.
The ceremony came just a few hours after the department was called to handle a major residential fire just outside the village.
Village President Gordon Jumper noted that the new firehouse, which is expected to cost approximately $700,000, is the latest in a series of upgrades for the 30-member volunteer fire department.
A $150,000 firetruck and a $175,000 rescue truck were purchased in the last four years and approximately $25,000 was spent on new equipment and coats.
"We ran out of room, which is a good problem to have,'' said Jumper, who thanked State Sen. Vince Demuzio (D-Carlinville) and State Rep. Jim Watson (R-Jacksonville), as well as former Rep. Tom Ryder (R-Jerseyville) for their help in getting state grants that helped with the improvements.
"This was a joint project,'' said Jumper. "Some of it came from the village, some from state grants and some from local donations secured by the volunteer firemen,'' he said.
The project also will include a road from Vandalia to Minor Drive south of the village.
The firehouse will include several bays for department equipment, a training area and a conference room, with parking areas also in the project.
Jumper said the donated land on which the firehouse will be constructed is sufficient to possibly one day build a new village hall, but added, "That is probably a long way off."
South Jacksonville Fire Chief David Hickox, whose father Sonny was chief for many years before him, said his department is "ecstatic'' about getting the project off the ground.
"We have been working on this for six or seven years,'' said Hickox. "We have been trying to raise money and have sold a lot of sandwiches. We think, if things get going like expected, we could get in the building early next year.
"It is extremely crowed where we are now. When we got the new rescue truck, we had to demolish my office to make room for it, and my office now is about 3-feet by 8-feet, like a walk-in closet."
