10-4, good buddy  Police radios to improve in rural areas  By JOHN REYNOLDS  STAFF WRITER (State Journal Register)
Sangamon County officials are moving forward on a project that should make it easier for sheriffs deputies to use their radios in rural areas.

Lt. Dan Mancini of the Sangamon County Sheriffs Office said that in some areas, deputies on patrol have access to only one police channel.
This means that if one deputy is already using the channel, a second deputy might not be able to get through to the dispatch center.  Such a situation could present a safety hazard if a deputy urgently needs help and is not able to contact other officers.
The current radio system uses a transmitter in Springfield and four relays that carry signals to rural parts of the county.  Relays are in Illiopolis, Auburn, New Berlin and at the Richland Elevator near Pleasant Plains. The planned improvement, involves adding two channels to the relays in Illiopolis and Auburn. This means that when deputies near these communities can get through on the primary channel, they will be able to use the other two channels. Local law enforcement officials in those areas will also have access to the channels.
Cost of the upgrade is estimated at $100,000, with the money coming from a $90,000 federal grant and $10,000 from the county’s narcotics forfeiture fund. County officials hope to have the improvements finished by mid-September.  When more money is available, the other two relays will be improved.   John Reynolds can be reached at 788-1524 or john.reynolds@sj-r.com.

Sangamon County Central Dispatch System ("Sangamon County Control")
ESDA/911/Sheriff/Springfield PD/Springfield FD

***1996 consolidated dispatch of Springfield PD, Springfield FD and Sangamon County Sheriff/911
1/02 - ESDA gets new rescue vehicle with state grant
Its 25,000-watt generator can practically light up a football field, and its onboard compressed-air system can refill air tanks for firefighters or scuba divers. The new truck also boasts a 20-foot walk-in area with heat and air conditioning that can be used by cold, underwater divers in the winter or exhausted firefighters in the summer. The 2002 model International was purchased with a $200,000 Illinois FIRST grant.  The new vehicle, designated Rescue 1, will do the job of three 1970-vintage trucks that are being retired. They include a rescue truck that carries extrication equipment used at the scene of car wrecks, a vehicle that carries underwater rescue equipment and another used as a mobile command post.   Bill Russell, chief of the Sangamon County ESDA Rescue Squad, said that on some occasions, rescuers would be called to an incident that required two or three of the old trucks.  Divers, for instance, would sometimes need the extrication tools to open doors on submerged vehicles.  Butt noted that even though the rescue squad will have fewer vehicles, it still will be able to respond to more than one incident at a time. In addition to the new truck, Sangamon County ESDA will continue to operate two others.
The new truck was custom-designed, with several storage areas that can be reached from the outside and the heated/air-conditioned interior accessible by a door at the rear. On the roof is a collapsible pole that can raise a set of lights about 15 feet into the air.
