Aircraft Emergency Beacons

The system that monitors the aircraft beacons is called SARSAT (Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking).  It uses 121.5/243/406 MHz receivers on TIROS weather satellites.  It was monitored by a group called AFRCC that was at Scott AFB but moved several years ago.  Here is their URL http://www2.acc.af.mil/afrcc//

Here is a update for St. Louis International Airport freq's.
In preparation to move the Radar Approach control to its new location in Weldon Springs Mo. They have changed most of their frequency assignments.
You may still hear some transmissions on the old frequencies for a short time, as they continue to phase them out. The move to the new Radar Approach Facility is scheduled for late winter early spring.
The format below is taken from the NOTAM (Notice To AirMen) sent by the FAA.  If a current frequency is not listed then it was not changed.

Since TWA has so many gates and aircraft at lambert they have their own controllers who control the ramp area around the TWA gates.  When ready to push back from the gate we call Ramp Control and get pushback clearance.
Then when we are ready to taxi out we switch to Ground Metering. This is an FAA control position. They put the outbound aircraft in order and then hand you off to Outbound Ground Control. Ground gives you taxi instructions to the
departure runway. Once you get to the runway, you switch to either north or South Tower for takeoff.

4/12/01 - Capital Airport is planning changes in a radio-approach system for aircraft because of rising land prices 5 miles away.  They will probably relocate a "VOR" trasmitter (a device that broadcasts locator signals to incoming pilots) from the Andrews Road area in Sherman to an area near the middle of the airport.
9/4/02 - Northwest's departure leaves Springfield travelers with three commercial airlines - ATA, AmericanConnection and United Airlines - from which to    choose. That's the same number of choices local fliers had before Northwest and ATA arrived.   The airport's passenger numbers have been on the rise throughout 2002. More than 50,000 passengers flew out of Capital during the first half of the  year. That represents a 47 percent increase compared to the same time last   year.  At this rate, the airport should easily surpass the 73,936 passengers who flew out of Springfield in 2001. The last time Capital Airport's annual passenger number surpassed those of the pervious year was 1993. The coveted jet service also was realized last month. Air Wisconsin, which flies under the United Express name in the Springfield market, upgraded all   its routes to 50-seat Canadair jets.

Central Illinois Regional Airport - Bloomington, IL ($31 million annually)

4/15/01 - The newest terminal will soon open and it will sport 7 ticket counters and jet bridges.  It is $103,00 sq ft and sits at the opposite end of the runways from the existing terminal.  The original terminal, built in 1971, was 28,000 sq ft.    Construction is expected to be completed by mid-July and to be in use by September.
11/18/00 -  Now, after congressional pressure, the airline is not moving out.  The airlines, who's parent compnay is American Airlines, recenlty abandoned Springfield's Capitol Airport and the Quad Cities Airport in Moline.
11/10/00  -  Last week American Eagle converted all of its flights to jet service.   This week they announce they are pulling out of the airport all together on Jan. 3, 2001.

Scanner/Cellular use on aircraft

The FAA tells us that we can't let people use any portable electronic device that receives or transmits a signal, after the aircraft's boarding door has been closed. The reason for this is due to the possibility of stray signals interfering with the aircraft's communication and navigation equipment. There is also a theory that stray signals from devices like cell phones and some lap top computers may actually cause interference with some aircraft's flight control systems.  That would only affect aircraft with fly-by-wire flight control systems, however. All this came about after two unexplained accidents (United 737 at Colorado Springs and a USAir 737 at Pittsburgh) in which aircraft had uncommanded control movements

Clearance Delivery-This is an FAA position in which pilots call this frequency to get clearance from airport to airport.  It sounds like this "" TWA 123 is cleared to Boston via the Gateway 2 departure, Rosewood, then as filed, maintain five thousand. Departure is 119.15, squawk 1523."
It tells the pilot how to get there, how high he is to climb to initially, what frequency he is to talk on
after take off and what code he is to put in the Transponder. The transponder is a kind of transmitter that helps positively identify each aircraft by giving every one a different 4 digit code.
